ToggleDid you just wake up with vertigo?
Did the dizziness seem to come out of nowhere?
Are you searching for an explanation?
Many times when people come to see us at Atlas Chiropractic, they feel like nothing specific happened and they just all of a sudden woke up with this awful dizziness known as vertigo. When I start to ask about their history and dig deep into the timeline leading up to the vertigo, I usually find the same series of events. There are 3 very common reasons why people develop vertigo seemingly “out of nowhere”.
Here are the most common reasons why people get vertigo:
Auto Accident
If you have ever been in a car accident, you know it can be really scary and stressful. Many times people get into car accidents and walk away “feeling fine” and think that it was nothing serious. Sometimes they might have a sore neck for a few days or a slight headache, but no significant pain. They brush it off and don’t bother seeing a doctor, chiropractor, or filing a claim with their insurance. What you have to realize is that you have a ton of adrenaline and protective mechanisms rushing through your body at the time of impact to help you get through the trauma! Our bodies are so smart and work really hard to keep the pain at bay. However, it is serious! The best time to get your head and neck checked by a chiropractor is immediately after the auto accident, whether you feel fine or not. This is essential to preventing future issues. If you never get checked or get the proper care for the damage that happened to your neck, soft tissue, and spine, you can develop serious symptoms in the future. Vertigo is simply one of those symptoms.
Prolonged Stress
You have probably heard the term “fight or flight” before. Our bodies go into autopilot when we are presented with danger. This is great when it is only temporary. For many people they deal with a stressful situation that puts them in this fight or flight for a very long time. When your body is constantly working in overdrive it slowly starts to break down. No one can maintain this state over the long haul. Information comes to the brain via sensory input. When we smell something or taste something. This happens because of a nerve signal to the brain. When the brain is overloaded from too much sensory input from being in this protective state it can’t process. This is why vertigo is common with a prolonged stressful environment.
Sedentary Posture
If you are like most people, you probably sit at a desk staring at a computer screen for many hours of the day. Whether you do this for work or not, you are also often in this position when you are driving your car or watching TV. Our bodies are not designed to sit and definitely not designed to sit in front of a computer or phone for hours and hours at a time! Did you know that the average American spends 2 hours a day on social media?! Ouch. It’s no wonder we are all facing so many physical and mental challenges that have never been present before. Humans are meant to move! We are meant to be active in order to have a healthy, functioning body. When we don’t move as much as our body is designed to, all kinds of problems can arise. Our muscular and skeletal systems have jobs and tasks that they are intended to perform and when we don’t “use it”, we “lose it”. This sedentary lifestyle can lead to very common issues like stiff neck, headaches, low back pain, anxiety, and, yes, even vertigo.
Have you been suffering from one or more of these issues in your life? The good news is that vertigo is very treatable and our office specializes in vertigo cases. If you have had a car accident, whether it was recent or years ago, prolonged stress, or live with a sedentary posture, you are a candidate for our specialized care.
At Atlas Chiropractic, we find the root cause of the problem. In our office we take computerized infrared thermography scans and biomechanical x-rays to figure out exactly what is going on with your nervous system and what may be causing your vertigo. Once we remove the interference in your nervous system that is causing these symptoms, your body is finally able to heal. Instead of just merely covering up the symptoms, we find the underlying cause so that you can have lasting health without complications or side effets.
Every day I talk with people who have given up hope of ever getting rid of their vertigo. They feel defeated and that they will have to live with their pain and suffering forever. We love to tell them that there IS hope, they CAN heal, and that they are in the right place.
