I am sure that all women who have been pregnant (no matter how long) can attest to the fact that, through all stages, it is a rough time. From light cramping during implantation to morning sickness to back pain to all of the other seemingly endless symptoms, we all are just aching for a break. When conventional methods go away, like taking painkillers, a lot of us think that we just have to reach acceptance and put up with it. But, Mama, that is not true! There are plenty of all-natural care options that are available to help you have as comfortable a pregnancy as you can. One path to take is chiropractic care. Whether you are surviving through headaches and neck pain from stress, low back pain, or pelvic pain–chiropractic care is for you! Some obstetrician-gynecologists will even recommend chiropractic care to patients! The doctors at the woman-owned practice,  Atlas Chiropractic of Boulder, are here to help you feel at ease during your pregnancy and the postpartum period too.

Why do I even have all of these symptoms?

Starting from fertilization, which takes place about 24 hours or less after sexual activity (just keeping it real), your body begins to change. But, about 7-10 days after fertilization when implantation occurs, things start kicking into gear. With the increase of human chorionic gonadotropin, more commonly known as HCg, a woman’s body starts preparing itself for change to occur. Sometimes, during this implantation process, mild cramping can occur because the embryo is burrowing itself into the uterus which can cause some mild irritation. But, also when implantation occurs the naturally occurring substance prostaglandins are released, which can contribute to the cramping. Finally, there is an increase of blood flow in the body which can also add to the causes of the cramping. We do advise that if the cramping seems severe or there is bleeding that is worrisome to you, always reach out to your OB/GYN.

After the implantation process, your body, as you can imagine, starts grinding its gears. Your hormones increase, your blood flow increases…it seems that everything increases. All of these changes, although natural, are still hard on your body. At the end of the day, change is still change.

Then as the pregnancy progresses things like morning sickness, low back pain, pelvic pain, and a seemingly endless list of symptoms appear. While experiencing certain symptoms can be a sign of a healthily progressing pregnancy, that doesn’t mean some of them can’t be a little easier to deal with.

What can I do?

Navigating health in general is a sometimes grueling, scary, and confusing territory. This process is exacerbated when pregnant. Even if you know what to expect and have heard of the symptoms, no amount of statistics or research can tell you exactly how your experience will be. Each pregnancy is different, even if it is the same mama having multiple kids. As mentioned earlier, seeking out alternative methods of health care as opposed to conventional methods is a recommended step to take. Luckily, there are two Boulder chiropractors committed to helping you experience as much ease as you can during the pregnancy.

Now, you may just be thinking of chiropractic as “a whole lotta crackin’,” but, at our practice, we take a different approach. We offer what is called upper cervical chiropractic care, which is a specialty within the realm of chiropractic. This technique involves no twisting of the neck and it is a quick, one-and-done thrust adjustment. We primarily focus on adjusting the uppermost vertebrae (bones) in the spine, specifically the C1 and C2 vertebrae. However, there are situations, such as with pregnant women, where we make sure to also examine and potentially adjust the pelvis. This is particularly important due to the hormone relaxin, which relaxes ligaments and can potentially cause issues in that region.

Although only adjusting the upper part of the neck, upper cervical care is certainly a full-spine treatment approach. The body’s neurology enables a single adjustment to have a positive impact on nerve signals that are experiencing interference. This, in turn, has a broader influence on the entire body. Here, at Atlas Chiropractic of Boulder, we know that most of the time, less is more and our approach shows that.
