As Boulder chiropractors we get this question all the time. Do I have a herniated disk? It seems like a term that gets thrown around. People equate back pain or neck pain with having a bulging disk or herniated disk. Most of the time people do not have a herniated disk, but they can still be in a lot of pain. If you have lack of motion in your neck or back, this can cause you a lot of pain. This doesn’t mean you have a herniated disk. We always recommend to patients to try conservative care, such as adjustments and soft tissue treatment before surgery.
Most people come into the office because they are suffering from neck pain, back pain, headaches, or numbness. We get great results with patients dealing with these types of symptoms. Many times these patients have tried pain medication and even different alternative therapies before they try chiropractic. The reason that chiropractic is so effective with neck pain, back pain, and headaches is because when your joints don’t move the way they should that can lead to pain. Our main objective is to restore motion in your spine and get your brain to work at it’s best ability.
Neck Pain
There are many different causes of neck pain. most of the time people experience neck pain from past and current traumas. Those traumas are usually a macro trauma like a car accident or skiing accident or repetitive traumas like computer work. After you have a trauma in your neck, your body will build up scar tissue and and limit your normal range of motion. When this happens and you don’t restore your normal range of motion the end result is pain and stiffness. The most effective way to reduce this pain is to restore your normal range of motion. Chiropractic adjustments are a great way to restore your normal range of motion. The best part about chiropractic adjustments is that they are a long lasting solution and very little side effects.
Back Pain
Did you know that 80% of Americans will experience back pain in their live. Back pain accounts for more than 264 million lost work days in one year!! That is a big problem. Most people think that pain medication is the only way to treat back pain. But that is not a lasing solution and there are terrible side effects from pain medication.
When Should You Get Imaging?
If you have extreme pain or numbness in your legs, hands, or feet you should get an MRI to see what is going on. An MRI is the best type of imaging to know for sure if you have a herniated disk.
If you experience any difficulty in controlling your bowel and/or bladder movements, numbness in your inner thigh and genital area, and/or problems in starting urination, consult your doctor immediately. These symptoms and signs may indicate cauda equina syndrome, a serious medical emergency, which is possible with certain severe lower back disc herniations
