Have you ever stopped and asked yourself, “Why are our children becoming more ill year after year? Why are rates of ADHD, Autism, and Depression/Anxiety rising at such an alarming rate?” If not, let me share with you what I have found, because this trend keeps me up at night.
Our Bodies are Delicate
If you are like me, you were taught from an early age that our body is virtually indestructible. Fall out of a tree? Walk it off. Mom running late from work? Order a pizza. Grandparent passes away? Go to school the next day. For simplicity, let’s call these factors stress.
Stress is all around us, every day. Some of it is BIG, and some not so much. The bottom line is stress ACCUMULATES.
What Happens When Stress is TOO High?
Our bodies are meant to be dynamic, and ever-changing. Have you ever noticed that your body temperature is relatively the same your whole life? Meaning if you were to walk outside where it is 15* F, your body temperature stays at 98.6* F. Your brain had to detect that temperature change and adapt in order to maintain a normal temperature.
When stress is TOO high, the ability of the human body to make these types of adaptations becomes compromised. When this happens, our natural ability to adapt as a whole begins to break down and symptoms arise.
Stress Causes Symptoms
It is no secret that children who are going through conditions like ADHD, Autism, and Depression/Anxiety are dealing with high levels of stress. Some of that stress may be self-inflicted, and some builds up from outside sources for years. Regardless, this stress is directly impacting how the brain functions.
Have you ever been stressed to the point that your stomach hurts, your palms start to sweat, and your heart races? Imagine LEARNING to live in that state. Not temporarily, but permanently. Our bodies are delicate, but also highly intelligent. When stress is high – and remains high – our body will suppress that stress sensation so we can continue to function.
The Brain is King
The good news is that in the same way that symptoms arise when the body CANNOT adapt, symptoms can fall away once the body CAN. The brain is KING in maintaining health throughout our lives, beginning in infancy and never letting go. Determining how the brain is functioning is the GREATEST step you can take to help your child get better.
It is clear that the health of our children is under attack. For some reason rates of childhood disorders are skyrocketing. What I know for sure is that the best doctor on this planet lies within each of us. We are designed to heal. When you cut your finger, you clean the wound and wrap it in a bandage. 5 days later the cut is closed. If you applied the same remedy to a steak, I promise the cut would not close. The body heals itself when the brain is functioning.
Remember, your current state of health does NOT dictate your future.
