Getting to the root cause of what is going on has always been a driving force in my life.  When those closest to me began to develop migraine headaches, it really pushed me to try and figure out what is really going on.  Taking pain killers, or other opiate treatments did not seem like a resolution to the problem, but rather a way to mitigate the symptoms.

This lack of a true understanding of migraine headaches drove me to PubMed, a scientific research database, where I spent months trying to put together the pieces to a puzzle without seeing what the end result would really look like.  Have you ever tried to put a puzzle together without first looking at the image on the box?? It’s hard!!

What my research led me to was a renowned Clinical and Radiological Anatomist, Nikolai Bogduk.  What Bogduk has theorized and published is what he calls the cause of all headaches, stemming from an issue within a particular nucleus in the brain stem called the Trigeminal Cervical Nucleus.

It is by tailoring my care to this understanding that migraine patients have been able to finally find an answer to what has been going on in their bodies for sometimes over 50 years.  This understanding of anatomy and neurology, as well as a way to apply them to patients, has been exhilarating, and I am so grateful to be able to share it with my patients.

To summarize:

  • Accidents and injuries change the way the upper neck moves
  • The muscles and ligaments remodel themselves to this new position
  • This changed movement affects the brain, specifically the brain stem
  • When this happens, people develop headaches including common migraines, cluster headaches, hormonal headaches, and classic migraines

How to find the root cause of migraines and a solution

Injuries change the way the upper neck move, therefore, creating a problem with the brain stem is the function.  To correct this problem you need to have the biomechanics of your neck evaluated if you are having chronic headaches or migraines.  I find that this has been overlooked most of the time by other practitioners.  Once the motion is restored in the neck, then your body can function properly and begin to heal.
