Atlas Misalignment

An atlas misalignment is probably one of the most overlooked, but most important health issues that people are dealing with today. A simple explanation of a misalignment of an Atlas bone is that the top vertebrae in your neck are not moving correctly. When this happens people can have symptoms like: headaches, vertigo, neck pain, brain fog, and anxiety.

What is the Atlas bone?

The Atlas bone is the very first vertebrae in your spine. It is also known as your C1. The name Atlas comes from the Greek god Atlas that is holding up the world. Your Atlas bone is literally holding up your whole world. Your head is resting on this very important bone and if you do not have proper alignment, many health issues can arise

Atlas misalignment symptoms:

  • Vertigo: A symptom that causes a person to feel like the room or environment is spinning around them.
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV):  is a common disorder of the inner ear with symptoms including dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness and nausea
  • Ménière disease a chronic inner ear disorder that causes vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, and a feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Headaches: A pain or tension in the temples or base of the head.
  • Brain fog: When someone feels like they are not thinking clearly and they are walking around in a “fog”
  • Anxiety: A feeling of worry and uneasiness
  • Neck pain

Can an atlas misalignment cause anxiety?

The simple answer is yes. There are a few reasons that anxiety can be caused by an atlas misalignment.

  1. It prevents proper blood drainage from the brain
  2. It affects Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) flow
  3. It creates brainstem tension

What causes the atlas to come out of alignment?

There are a lot of reasons that an atlas can become misaligned. But the most simple explanation is stress. There are three types of stress that affect your body: physical, mental, and chemical.

Physical stress can be a trauma like a car accident, skiing accident, slip or fall. Sometimes people have a sporting accident or a concussion early in their life.

Mental stress can be prolonged stress at work, fighting with a family or a loved one, or just the stress of life. Many people have chronic mental stress due to their job or circumstances in their life. This mental stress over time can produce a physical manifestation.

A chemical stress can be any toxin that your body intakes. This could be like a mechanic having to deal with fumes or a hairstylist exposed to different types of chemicals and toxins on a daily basis.

The truth of the matter is that most people deal with all three of these stresses in their lives and don’t realize how it’s impacting their health.

Why is an atlas misalignment so common?

The Atlas and Axis move freely to facilitate motion, making them prone to misalignment. Unlike the rest of the spine that have facets that hold the bones in place, the Atlas and Axis, or Craniocervical joint are only surrounded by soft tissue. This makes that area very vulnerable to trauma.

What should you do if you suspect that you have an atlas misalignment?

If you have been dealing with chronic headaches, migraines, vertigo, neck pain, brain fog, or anxiety you might have atlas misalignment.

You need to find someone who specializes in aligning the atlas bone. These doctors are very specialized chiropractors known as upper cervical chiropractors. Upper cervical chiropractors specialize in the Atlas and Axis or C1 or C2 of your spine. These upper cervical chiropractors will do a full analysis, orthopedic test, x-ray analysis and usually an objective measurement to test your brain function. Once an upper cervical chiropractor verifies that you do have an atlas misalignment, they will begin a treatment plan to realign this bone and help your body heal overtime.

How do you find an Upper Cervical Chiropractor?

The best way to find an Upper Cervical specialist is to google “upper cervical chiropractor near me”

Unfortunately your medical doctor or primary care physician has probably never heard of that kind of chiropractor. In fact they may even try to talk you out of finding an upper cervical doctor. Don’t let that discourage you. Upper cervical doctors have helped thousands of people heal from chronic health issues, especially when all of their “tests are negative”

If you have been told that “you just have to live with it” you are the perfect candidate for Upper cervical care.
