One Simple Step to Help You Live Longer
One of the most common questions I get in my office is: “I want to start eating better, but I don’t know where to start?” There is a simple and direct answer; get rid of your microwave. I get some weird and horrified looks. “But how do I heat up left overs?” or “Cooking takes too much time!” Well, boys and girls, sometimes you have to put in a little effort to be healthy….
The microwave is the most harmful appliance in your house. Let’s put aside the fact that the way that a microwave works (alternating current acting on the electrons in the food and causing them to become “excited”, thereby increasing their kinetic energy) is not good for you.
It means that the food you put into a microwave has its molecular structure changed from the inside out. That doesn’t really sound like the healthiest way of having my veggies. Aside from that, I want to focus on what your lifestyle becomes when you make your food in under 10 minutes.
The kinds of “foods” that are designed for a microwave are not really food to begin with. They look and smell like food, but in fact they are all synthetically made in a lab. Have you ever read the ingredients on the back of one of those packages? Disodium inosinate & guanylate with a side of yellow dye #4. Yum.
Here is something to think about: If you don’t have a microwave, you are forced to cook. When you cook your own food, even if it is not the healthiest, you at least know the ingredients of what is going in your dinner, and I bet you can pronounce them too! One of the major problems in our society is that we are getting such a high caloric content, but such a low nutritional content because we are not eating anything that is close to real food. That means our bodies are starving when we eat processed food.
And here is another point. Cooking should be something that brings people together. If you are cooking a meal that takes 30 minutes to an hour to prepare, you are more likely to sit down for dinner with your friends or family. Studies show that kids who sit down and eat dinner with their family are less likely to develop diabetes, have increased chances of getting better grades, and are kept away from cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs.
Now, I have not had a microwave for 2 years and honestly I haven’t even noticed. So, how do I heat up leftovers? Well, I have a toaster oven, which cooks almost as fast as a microwave, and I use this thing called the stove. So put down the Hot Pocket, step away from the Lean Cuisine, and eat some real, delicious food. I promise it is not that hard and the impact that it can have on your health and your family’s health is dramatic!
