I want to tell you a story about my grandfather, Jose.  Over the years, Jose has worked many jobs, both here in the United States as well as back home in Mexico.  Some of his jobs included: boxer, restaurant owner, and baker.  His wife and 6 children worked in the restaurant and bakery for the many years it was open.  My grandfather has never been a stranger to hard work, filling his days with different activities even after retirement.  It was a surprise to all of us when he was diagnosed with high blood pressure in 2005.  At that time he was prescribed an ACE inhibitor drug, and has been taking it everyday for the past 10 years.  The question I ask myself, and I will pose it to you all here is: if he were to stop taking his medication tomorrow, what would happen to his blood pressure? Obviously, it would rise, but do you think it would rise to the level it was 10 years ago, or would it rise even higher?  Yes, in fact it would rise to a value higher than what it was 10 years ago.  That’s a scary thought, that my grandfather is actually worse off today than he was in 2005.  That the ACE inhibitor medication is merely suppressing a symptom of a cause that has not being addressed.
High blood pressure is a condition where the flow of blood is under greater pressure than what we would consider normal.  This can be due to a few different causes; the first being narrowed blood vessels due to plaque buildup. The second is due to a physiological change that occurs due to a constant stress on the body.  It is not due to a physical narrowing of blood vessels, but rather a change in the physiology of the body.
This was demonstrated in an article published in the Journal of Human Hypertension.  The study found anatomical abnormalities of the cervical spine at the level of the Atlas vertebra being associated with relative ischemia of the brainstem circulation and increased blood pressure (BP).  This is not due to a true narrowing of blood vessels but rather a change in the physiology of the body.  What the study concluded was that the patients who received a single treatment of this first bone in the spine had a lowering of blood pressure greater than the effect of two hypertension medications lasting for 8 weeks with no reported adverse effects.
