Do you ever feel in a funk?  Like your brain just isn’t working like it once did.  You just don’t feel as sharp as you once did. Many people refer to these feelings as brain fog.  Brain fog is a generalized term for problems with the function of memory, cognitive function, focus issues, and even brief episodes of confusion.  For some people this can lead to anxiety, especially in older patients.

Today I wanted to give you 4 tips on what you can do on your own to help manage your brain fog symptoms.

Cut the sugar out:

Your brain needs glucose (sugar) to function.  In fact it loves sugar. The problem is when you have a surge of a lot of sugar you will also have a crash.  This is what happens to most people around 2:30. If you can cut out process sugar, your body will regulate the breakdown of glucose in a more steady manner

Cut the caffeine out:

Just like sugar you can be on this roller coaster of highs and lows with caffeine.  How often do you visit starbucks on a daily basis? Are you chasing that caffeine dragon?  Did you know that caffeine can have an affect on the neurochemistry in your brain!? Caffeine  influences neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine, dopamine, and acetylcholine. These have effects on mood and mental processing.

Cut out the gluten:

I know it may seem like a hipster thing to do, but gluten does have an effect on sugar levels.  Gluten also causes inflammation in your body. Inflammation can cause pain, fatigue, and brain fog.

Add probiotics:

Probiotics promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria and have been linked to a wide range of health benefits.  There has been a ton of studies with the connection between the gut health to mood and mental health.  It was found that probiotics has reduced levels of C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation) and hormones such as insulin.

I hope this information helps you manage your brain fog symptoms a little better.

But what if you have already tried all of these tips?

If you have done some or all of these and are still dealing with Brain Fog you might be missing something.  What I have found is the piece that gets overlooked many times is the actual function of the brain and nervous system.  Have you had your nervous system checked? If not, I would love to talk to you about that. In my office, we specialize in finding and correcting improper nervous system function.  I would love to chat with you about your health struggles.
