Many times when I meet people in Boulder and they learn that I help people overcome health problems, they in turn tell me about their health issues.  I am amazed by what people think is “normal” and what they have to just “deal with.”  One of the most common thing I hear is “I’m pretty healthy, I just have normal headaches”.  When I dig a little further I find out that these “normal” headaches can occur up to 3-4 times a week and stop them from doing the things they love to do!  I don’t want people to confuse “normal” with “common.”  Common just means that many people experience headaches.   Just because many people experience headaches doesn’t mean that it is a normal state of health.  The simple truth is experiencing headaches all the time is NOT normal.  And if you understand how physiology works, you will understand why blaming “triggers” for your headaches are only part of the problem.  Many people think they are experiencing headaches because they are dehydrated, didn’t have their caffeine fix, have a fluctuation with their hormones, or a specific food they ate.  However, even when people eliminate their “triggers” they are still having headaches.  Another thing to think about is:  if headaches were caused solely because of “triggers” then why doesn’t everyone have headaches?
The answer is because a symptom, like a headache, is only a warning sign.  You are having a headache because something inside you is not functioning properly.  Much like when your engine lite comes on in your car.  The reason the light comes on is because it is signaling something is wrong with the function of the car.  So if you understand that something is not working inside of you, it makes sense that taking medication cannot possibly cure you.  If you have frequent headaches, I know you are familiar with taking medication. What often happens is the medication will work for a while but ultimately wear off. You get put on something new that again helps for a time, but the headaches keep breaking through.  The reason that these headaches come back is because you are only treating the symptom not the cause.  You may be asking yourself well this all makes sense, but what is the cause?
The answer is simple… But first let’s talk a little about how your body functions, or at least how it should function.  Let’s start with the basics.  Quick question: What controls every function in your body?  Many of you would say “the brain.”  And you would be right!  The brain and your nervous system control every function in your body.  YES, everything.  More specifically there is a portion of your brain called the brain stem.  This portion controls your autonomics, which means everything you don’t think about.  Your brain stem controls: breathing, blood flow, heart function, postural muscles, and even your pain modulation.  Well how does this correlate with my headaches you may me asking? If your brain stem is not properly controlling things like: blood flow, pain modulation and hormone uptake, you can have symptoms like chronic headaches.   Especially if you have tried to eliminate those triggers but still have chronic headaches.
Here is the good news…. Here at Atlas Chiropractic of Boulder, our Boulder Chiropractors are specially trained in finding neurological dysfunction and correcting it.  We use special diagnostic computerize thermography and bio-mechanical laser aligned x-rays.  Our goal is to find the cause of the problem, not just cover up the symptom. If you spend your life simply chasing symptoms, you will never truly be well and end up wasting your time and money.  I don’t know about you, but those are two things that I think are very precious.
If you are frustrated by the results you are achieving by merely managing your headaches, our office is the perfect place for you.  In fact I am so certain that what we do in the office will make so much sense to you that I am willing to offer a complimentary consultation with one of our Dr.’s to discuss your case and tell you if we can help you.  There is no reason why you have to live with these headaches any more.
