Boulder Doctor for Neck Pain and Headaches
Have you ever had the feeling that everything is crashing down on you? You are trying so hard to keep your head above water, but no matter what you seem to be drowning. Many people describe this feeling as being overwhelmed. Being a doctor who focuses on overall wellbeing, I help people all the time who feel like they have lost control of their lives.
The truth is health is very simple, but that doesn’t mean it is easy. In fact, some of the most simple things in life are the most difficult. I want to offer you 5 tips that I have seen positively impact people’s overall well-being and success.
Let me break it down for you:
#1 Write down 3 things you are grateful for every day
Sometimes when we are so focused on what we need to get accomplished, we forget the amazing things we already have. This simple task also brings your energy to a different space. When you are focused on the positive aspects of your life, you will attract more positive things to you. You may be surprised at how many things you already have to be grateful for. Morning Miracle is a great book about how to start your day off right and how being grateful is at the core of feeling more energetic and calmer.
#2 Plan out your week
When you are feeling overwhelmed you may feel like you can’t catch up. You make everything worse by not being organized or prepared. I find that the feeling of being overwhelmed is actually the feeling of not knowing what to do next. A wonderful tool that I use is called a “Passion Planner”. Not only is this a planner, but it breaks down your goals into manageable steps.
I find that this tip is the first to go when people feel overwhelmed. “I’m just too busy to exercise.” This is a BIG mistake! Exercise increases blood flow, releases endorphins, and decreases stress. When your body is in an overstressed state, you may tend to make poorer decisions. Making poor decisions can cause you more stress and add to your feeling of being defeated. Also, when you focus on a single task like a jog or walk, many times the brain will be clearer and the answer you have been looking for will just appear.
This is another tip people say they don’t have enough time to accomplish. This is false! A 5-10 min meditation can reset your brain and bring you a sense of peace. I am one of those people that needs a guided meditation. My mind tends to wonder if I don’t have someone to tell me what to do. A great meditation app I use is called “Insight Timer”. The reason I love this app is that it contains hundreds of different meditations to choose from and you can just put in how much time you have. There are meditations as short as 3 min and as long as over and hour.
#5 Seek outside help
Sometimes life can seem a little too difficult to manage on our own and it is ok to ask for help. This may be help from friends and family, or professional help. We all went to appear strong, confident and composed, but everyone needs help from time to time. In times of crisis, it is better to surround yourself with loving supportive people. Understanding that you do not have to do this alone will help you manage the feeling of being overwhelmed.
I hope these tips were helpful for you.
